Downham Market Town Council Deputy Clerk

Deputy Clerk - 39 hours per week

Downham Market Town Council is seeking a highly organised, proactive, and motivated individual to join our team as Deputy Clerk. This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in supporting a busy and forward-thinking Town Council serving the local community.

Working closely with the Town Clerk, the successful candidate will assist in the day-to-day administration of the Council and help ensure that its business is conducted efficiently, lawfully, and transparently.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the Town Clerk in all aspects of Council administration and governance
  • Preparing agendas, reports, and minutes for Council meetings
  • Clerking committee meetings as required, including evening attendance
  • Deputising for the Town Clerk when necessary, including attendance at Full Council meetings
  • Providing procedural guidance and support to councillors
  • Assisting with the delivery of projects, community initiatives, and civic events, including attendance at key events such as St Winnolds, Remembrance Sunday and the Christmas Lights Switch On
  • Acting as a point of contact in the office, dealing face-to-face with residents’ enquiries, concerns, and questions in a professional and helpful manner
  • Maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with policies and legislation
  • Managing workloads independently, using initiative to progress tasks and resolve issues
  • Applying and supporting adherence to the Council’s Standing Orders and Financial Regulations

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Strong administrative and organisational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
  • Confidence in dealing with members of the public in person
  • The ability to work independently and use their own initiative
  • A good understanding of Standing Orders and Financial Regulations, or willingness to learn quickly
  • A high level of attention to detail and professionalism
  • The ability to handle a varied workload and meet deadlines
  • Experience in local government or a similar environment
  • A CiLCA qualification or willingness to work towards it (desirable)

This is a primarily office-based, face-to-face role and requires flexibility, including attendance at evening meetings and civic events.

Training and development opportunities will be provided.

Starting Salary: SCP 20–25 (depending on experience)
